Gordon J Swenson Photographs and Essays

Note: Most of my photos in Bryce Canyon National Park were taken when I was still using a 35mm slide camera, and are still waiting to be scanned. Please stay tuned.

Note: All of these photos were taken before September, 2017, when a teenager, playing with fireworks during a burn ban, set a fire which burned for three months before being fully contained, and torched 50,000 acres. Based on the photos and maps I've seen online, it burned through most if not all of the areas shown in these photos. This could be viewed as the largest act of 'thrill vandalism' -- damage just for the fun of it, as distinguished from damage for money or power -- that has been committed in this country during my lifetime, and perhaps much longer.

I feel lucky to have visited the area a couple of times before the damage was done and, again based on the photos I've seen online, I have no desire to go back.

Note: Except for any that have been borrowed from the "Best" gallery, these photos have typically not been Photoshopped or tested by printing enlargements, and some may be flawed in closeup. But I've included them here because I like them anyway, and I hope you're not too distracted by the imperfections.
